Different Types of Warts

ADVERTISEMENTS

Warts are one of the most common skin problems today. It doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, they’re there! They occur when your skin or mucous membranes begin to thicken.

This thickening effect is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which is the culprit behind warts. Most warts are benign and are nothing to be worried about.

There are however warts that can cause cancer, so if you’re unsure, it is always best to get in contact with your doc, and check things out. Let’s look at some of the most common types of warts…

Common Warts (Verruca Vulgaris)

Verruca vulgaris are the most common of the different types of warts seen among humans. The incubation period can be anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

They can be spread through hand to hand contact. They often look like thick papules that have spots on their surface. The spots are caused by clots in the blood vessels found on the surface of the skin.

The most common areas that you’ll see the verruca vulgaris warts are on your knees, elbows, and hands.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are located on the underside of your feet. They can often be confused with calluses or corns as they harden, and get thicker. Plantar warts are often distinguished by black dots caused by the clotting of blood vessels.

Unlike other forms of warts, the plantar wart can spread under the skin instead of developing as a raised bump on your skin. This can be uncomfortable if they are in an area where weight is constantly put upon them.

Flat Warts

Flat warts usually develop on your face. The flat wart is more common among women than in men. They are usually small, but can easily multiply and form a small community of flat warts.

They are usually spread through scratching or shaving. Flat warts have a flat surface as the name suggests, and are brown or pinkish in color.

Genital Warts

The name says it all, genital warts are found in the genital area, and occur both in women and in men equally. Genital warts can take many different forms.

The most worrisome of the different types of warts is when they turn cancerous. They develop into cancer very rarely, but as always, check with your doctor if you’re concerned.

Genital warts range from small to large. They are usually flesh colored or a pigmented red or brown.

***

There are many different types of warts, and they vary in terms of how annoying and uncomfortable they are. The vast majority of warts will disappear on their own.

The four types of warts that I listed above are the most common ones found today. Keeping good hygiene will minimize your chance of contracting a wart.

Until next time! :)
