One of the most annoying things I know is having dry chapped lips. I always get dry lips at one point or another during the winter. I don’t like the stuff they put in commercial lip balms, so I decided to check out what else I could do, and I found a nice simple little recipe that you can make at home.

This recipe for homemade lip balm will be a real treat for your lips! It’s completely natural and very nutritious, giving your lips protection and softness.

It’s easy to make a lip balm at home, you can keep it simple with few ingredients or an unique mixture of all your favourite ones.

This is a basic recipe for homemade lip balm, which you can vary as you like.

You can easily make an organic lip balm, which will be even more nutritious for your lips, by only choosing organic ingredients. By using raw ingredients you’ll have a lip balm with nutrients that are more easily accessible for your lips and body.

The Benefits of Making Your Own Lip Balm

Benefits of making your own homemade lip balm are more about what isn’t in it, than what is:

  1. It’s Made Out of Wax
Most store bought lip balms use mineral oils (aka paraffin). They clog up your pores and do not allow your lips to breathe (i.e. they’ll suffocate!).
  2. No Synthetics
Synthetic fragrances can mess with your hormones. Sure, they smell good, but they will mess you up if you use them a lot.
  3. No Preservatives
I use beeswax in my lip balms and it keeps very well. I have no clue why companies use other preservatives, money purposes I guess ;) .
  4. Nourishing
If you buy a lip balm from the store, they’ll suffocate your lips! But if you decide to make your own, your lip balm will nourish and make your body and lips happy!

Lip Balm Base Recipe

I think you’ll be surprised at how simple this recipe for homemade lip balm is. You don’t have to add anything to this recipe if you don’t want to.

  • 1 part Beeswax   (at least 30 % for a hard balm)
  • 1 part Vegetable Oil (Olive oil, coconut oil, sesame oil etc…)
  • Optional: A few drops of your favorite essential oil for scent

You can usually find beeswax at a local farmers market or online.

How to Make Your Own Lip Balm

  1. Put the beeswax in a pot, preferably one with a spout to make it easier to pour into a lip balm container.
  2. Melt the beeswax gently in a warm water bath or on the top of a heated pot, just enough to melt it.
  3. Remove it from the heat and stir in the vegetable oil.
  4. Pour it into a small glass jar or lip palm tubes, and let it sit for about 20 minutes.

The lip balm will melt if it’s in sunlight or gets too warm. That’s not a problem, unless you have it in a lip balm tube and it leaks. So store it in a dark and cool place and it’ll keep longer.

Troubleshooting

The cool thing about lip balms is that you can easily correct your mistakes. If your balm is too hard, just warm it up again and add more oil. Too soft? Warm up some more wax and stir it in. Piece of cake!
